New Google+ Hangouts Logo Spotted

I spy with my little eye, an updated Google+ Hangouts logo on a recent Hangout On Air held by the Google Developers page.

If you participate in a hangout, or watch a Hangout On Air, you'll see a big Google+ Hangouts logo at the top-left of the screen. The current logo looks like this:

I was watching a Hangout On Air held by the +Google Developers page yesterday, and it instantly struck me that the logo is different. Take a look:

When comparing the two logos, not much has changed. The main differences are that the camera logo inside the speech bubble is marginally larger, the bubble is more squared, and the tail extends from the left side of the logo.

Here's the HOA from yesterday with the new Hangouts logo:

The logo's design is now consistent with the comment fields on the Google+ Comments plugin for Blogger, with the tail of the bubble flush with the side:

The logo in use on the version that Google employees only appears on hovercards and on peoples profiles as a button, but hasn't replaced the current iteration of the logo found in the ribbon menu yet (on on the mobile app). It has however, been recently uploaded to the Google Press site, previously it was the same shape as the Messenger icon that remains unchanged on the site.

Recent rumours suggest that Google Babel, the apparent codename for an imminent announcement of a unified messaging service could be called "Hangouts". This seems like a logical name for the service, having one place to send messages and video call etc. under the Hangouts brand.

So make of this as you will, it could be a hint of either a big upgrade to the Hangouts service, or part of a unified messaging service, which we're all hoping it will be.

What are your thoughts? Speculate away!
